What influenced my writing style

Hey there, fellow creatives and readers alike! 🎉

Today, I’m diving deep into a topic I’m sure many have thought long and hard on many times over; writing style.

Sigh, I’ll be honest — this one feels a bit challenging, like trying to nail jelly to a wall! But you know what? Let’s embrace this adventure together!

Many authors/writers at some point, face a crisis regarding their creative journey. Some authors cling to their unique voices, while others ride the waves of current trends. Honestly, I hold no judgment; I get it!

It makes money and one who just writes to have some form of sanity to go about my day instead of struggling with thoughts: a person who wishes to blend into society but is failing epically.

Away from that!

When I officially embarked on my writing journey, my primary goal was simply to get my thoughts on paper. I remember gathering the courage to post my first work — an old manuscript of about 20,000 words — on my tablet, thinking, “Hey, why not? No one knows me, so what’s the worst that could happen?” Spoiler alert: that book flopped hard in its first year. (Insert maniacal laughter here!) 😂

After this reality check, I dove headfirst into the writing community. I stumbled upon competitions that sparked my enthusiasm. Now, as a non-native German from an island that is a full stop on the world map in the Caribbean, I had a crisis. One crisis is that I grew up surrounded by music as a lead and performing arts, handcraft, and tourism as the goal of most Barbadians.

If not that, you have farming or aim for leaving the island for better supposedly opportunities. I picked the latter; that is why I ended up in Germany for over ten years (as of this original post).

What influenced me a lot was the love triangle books I found myself reading. Ah, as a voracious reader, I would read up to 1k-3k chapter web novel with ease—on the down low, those serialized books are robbery—even forgetting to write myself sometimes.

like a fool knowing I shouldn’t but was still completely absorbed in the emotional whirlwind of them all, wew, I can’t even help but comment on each paragraph.

The angst! The turmoil!

The males who would love a female lead but doomed to never have her or create a tragedy for another woman in the name of ‘love’

What?

But then I’d have to ask... why must innocence get dragged into such ridiculous drama? The emotions had me hooked!

Of course, I want to know, so I read on with my rollercoaster emotions.

Each novel seemed to follow a familiar pattern — love conquers all, the genius villain bites the dust, and our beloved secondary characters either drown in loneliness or enter convenient marriages. It raised burning questions in my mind!

This cycle, my friends, is precisely how ReverseHarem authors emerge — and even the ever-expanding realm of fanfiction.

Therefore I admit that out of all the books/novels I have read, Asian novels are by far the best written I have ever had the pleasure of reading when it comes to emotional investment as a reader—most—and I will stress again; most—Western authors.

As I look back, I can confidently say that my experiences shaped my writing style. Asian authors, in particular, set the bar high when it comes to emotional investment. Their narratives resonate so deeply with readers that I found myself striving for that same intensity, even as an amateur writer.

With persistence and time, I started to see progress, albeit at a snail’s pace! 🐌

Sure, my early writing was far from perfect, but that’s okay! It’s all part of the journey. By embracing feedback and putting myself out there — even self-publishing two paperback books! — I have steadily refined my voice and developed a solid writing style.

Now, I’m curious — what influences YOUR writing style? I’d love to hear your stories and experiences!

Let’s inspire each other to keep pushing boundaries and crafting beautiful narratives together, no matter where we come from. Until next time, keep writing and stay safe! ✨
